Sunday Street Art

Ocean & Sunset Ave.
Asbury Park, NJ
 Artist: Shepard Fairey

This city approved street artwork was executed just before the All Tomorrow's Parties Music Festival in 2011.  Shepard Fairey installed the work himself.  You can see a video, shot by local videographer Adam Worth, of Fairey talking about Asbury Park and the work he created and installed all over the city for the festival here:

I'm really digging this mural that is currently under construction on the North wall of A& J Sneakers in Asbury Park, NJ.  Word on the street is Tim Sramowicz, former partner of re|BEARTH Art Supply is responsible.  I'll be photographing this artwork over the course of the coming weeks to see how it unfolds.  More details soon!

Analogous Colors

Analogous Colors are colors that sit next to one another on the color wheel.  They have a common hue and lend themselves to be used in a color scheme.  An example of an analogous color scheme is "The Last Mountain", by Shepard Fairey.  In this artwork, Fairey has used the analogous colors yellow, yellow-orange, orange and red-orange and a bold, black silhouetted landscape, to make an impactful visual statement.

The Assignment: Choose a subject matter that means something to you and illustrate it with a graphic, black silhouette.  An example could be a tree to represent environmental awareness.  After selecting your subject, choose an analogous color scheme of three to five colors (from the tempera paints in class) to complete your painting.

Street Art Sundays

Every Sunday I'll be photographing & posting images of noteworthy street art in our local community and beyond.  Street art is visual art exhibited, and sometimes created, in public spaces.  Artists and locations will be published when available.

Corner of Vine & 14th Street - Philadelphia, PA

I personally liked the juxtaposition here between the corn fields on the left and the smoke stacks of the oil refineries on the right.  The artist(s) was clever in overlapping the stalk of corn with an oil well pump in the center to create a lighthouse or beacon effect.

Color Theory: An Exploration Through Street Art

Color, or hue, is the most expressive element in art and in it's most formal sense, can be studied from various points of perspective.  Over the past few weeks, as a class, primary & secondary colors have been explored and value & intensity scales have been successfully completed.

Now, to build on what you have learned...

In the coming weeks, Mr. Calvert's period 3 and period 6/7 classes, under the instruction of Mrs. Shoemaker, will examine color theory and color schemes through the lens of various street artists and their work.  Street Art is specifically visual art, developed in public spaces.  Lessons introduced will be based on:

·      Analogous Color Schemes

·      Complimentary Color Schemes

·      Monochromatic Color Schemes

·      Artist's Choice Pointillism

·      Warm & Cool Tones

After each lesson is introduced, you can check back at http://mrhsvisualarts.blogspot.com/ for more information, additional images and inspiration regarding the lesson and the artist(s) introduced.
