Monochromatic Color Scheme

A Monochromatic color scheme is composed of tints, shades and tones of one singular hue or color.  An example of a monochromatic color scheme is the below portrait, by Australian street and graffiti artist, Guido Van Helten.

This work was painted on location at the 2012 Harvest Music Festival festival in Australia.  In this artwork, Van Helten used tints and shades of red to create an artwork, utilizing spray paint.

For more of Guido Van Helten's work check out his website here:

Sunday Street Art

Otsego St. between Coffey St. and Dikeman St.
Red Hook section of Brooklyn, NY
Artist, educator and former colleague of mine, Leslie Steiger (http://lesliesteiger.com/Home.html), snapped the above image this past weekend in the Red Hook neighborhood section Brooklyn, NY.  I loved it so much that I wanted to share it with you guys!  The artist was incredibly clever in their use of objects to create graphic and illustrative lettering.  Can you make out what the graffiti says?  Consider all the shapes and objects when trying to determine the letters.  Enjoy!

Street Art Sunday

Back alley off Bangs Ave.
Asbury Park, NJ
I managed to capture the above collaborative graffiti work while it was being painted a few weeks back in Asbury Park.  Many of these panels are still up, however some have since been removed.  I had the opportunity to speak with one of the artists, NAVY8 (far right panel) who is a Brooklyn, NY based artist, about his work and creative process. You can see more of NAVY8's work here: http://www.juxtapoz.com/current/graffiti-spotlight-navy-8

Below are a few excerpts from our conversation about the mural...

I create graffiti in the most traditional sense and I feel a strong work
should both legible but stylized.  It should capture the attention of anyone who sees it.
Because we had permission to paint these panels, we were able to
take our time and make it more polished.

The artists and their locations who took part in this
collaborative piece were the following:
NAVY8: Brooklyn, NY
GABLE: Brooklyn, NY
BONUS: New York City, NY
BZEE: Harlem

Sunday Street Art Flashback!

Free & Center St.
Portland, ME

Last March, my husband and I visited the Maine Boat Builders show in Portland, ME.  We were greeted with unseasonably warm weather and spent some time cruising around the beautiful coastal city on our bicycles.  We were pleasantly surprised when, just by chance, we came across the above massive PORTLAND mural.  I had to stop and photograph it!

The bold artwork was designed and created by eight different artists, who collaborated to complete this bright and super colorful city approved mural.  Enjoy!

Sunday Street Art

58 Coles St.
Jersey City, NJ

Not sure who the artist is on this mural I came across in Jersey City this weekend, but it sure was impressive!  The artist appears to be making a visual statement synonymous to "the pen is truly mightier than the sword!"

Complementary Colors

Complementary Colors are colors that sit directly across from one another on the color wheel.  They lend themselves to be used in a color scheme.  An example of a complementary color scheme is "Growing, 4", by Keith Haring.  In this artwork, Haring has used expressive lines and the complementary colors orange, blue, green and red to make an colorful and graphic visual statement.
Keith Haring, "Growing, 4" 1988

The Assignment: Choose a subject matter that means something to you and illustrate it in the graphic and colorful style of Haring.  Implement the iconic designs that are the hallmark of Haring's work.  Some examples could be the "illuminating baby" or "barking dog".  In order to achieve this aesthetic, use expressive lines and bold shapes.  After selecting your subject, choose a complementary color scheme of at least two pairs (four colors) to complete your painting.

Zentangle Madness

Over the course of the past few weeks, students have been utilizing line and pattern while creating Zentangles.  Below are some examples of exemplary designs from period 3 and 6/7 Basic Art classes.  Awesome work guys!

Sunday Street Art

Ocean & Sunset Ave.
Asbury Park, NJ
 Artist: Shepard Fairey

This city approved street artwork was executed just before the All Tomorrow's Parties Music Festival in 2011.  Shepard Fairey installed the work himself.  You can see a video, shot by local videographer Adam Worth, of Fairey talking about Asbury Park and the work he created and installed all over the city for the festival here:

Analogous Colors

Analogous Colors are colors that sit next to one another on the color wheel.  They have a common hue and lend themselves to be used in a color scheme.  An example of an analogous color scheme is "The Last Mountain", by Shepard Fairey.  In this artwork, Fairey has used the analogous colors yellow, yellow-orange, orange and red-orange and a bold, black silhouetted landscape, to make an impactful visual statement.

The Assignment: Choose a subject matter that means something to you and illustrate it with a graphic, black silhouette.  An example could be a tree to represent environmental awareness.  After selecting your subject, choose an analogous color scheme of three to five colors (from the tempera paints in class) to complete your painting.

Street Art Sundays

Every Sunday I'll be photographing & posting images of noteworthy street art in our local community and beyond.  Street art is visual art exhibited, and sometimes created, in public spaces.  Artists and locations will be published when available.

Corner of Vine & 14th Street - Philadelphia, PA

I personally liked the juxtaposition here between the corn fields on the left and the smoke stacks of the oil refineries on the right.  The artist(s) was clever in overlapping the stalk of corn with an oil well pump in the center to create a lighthouse or beacon effect.

Color Theory: An Exploration Through Street Art

Color, or hue, is the most expressive element in art and in it's most formal sense, can be studied from various points of perspective.  Over the past few weeks, as a class, primary & secondary colors have been explored and value & intensity scales have been successfully completed.

Now, to build on what you have learned...

In the coming weeks, Mr. Calvert's period 3 and period 6/7 classes, under the instruction of Mrs. Shoemaker, will examine color theory and color schemes through the lens of various street artists and their work.  Street Art is specifically visual art, developed in public spaces.  Lessons introduced will be based on:

·      Analogous Color Schemes

·      Complimentary Color Schemes

·      Monochromatic Color Schemes

·      Artist's Choice Pointillism

·      Warm & Cool Tones

After each lesson is introduced, you can check back at http://mrhsvisualarts.blogspot.com/ for more information, additional images and inspiration regarding the lesson and the artist(s) introduced.
